About Csoóri Salon
The Csoóri Salon is one of Nomád Nemzedék’s longest-running and continuously evolving programme series, keeping the intellectual and poetic legacy of Sándor Csoóri alive through personal encounters, conversations and contemporary artistic creation.
In its early years, the series was hosted by the Petőfi Literary Museum, where Sándor Csoóri’s friends, fellow artists and contemporaries shared their memories of the poet, the man and the era of which he was a defining figure. Through personal stories and recollections, the guests created an intimate portrait of Csoóri and his intellectual world.
The Csoóri Salon later entered a new artistic phase under the direction of Miklós H. Vecsei. Artists from the Hungarian music and theatre scene select a poem, an idea or an excerpt from one of Csoóri’s essays as the inspiration for a new musical work. The premieres of these songs are accompanied by conversations about the creative process, poetry and what Sándor Csoóri’s intellectual legacy means to artists today.
Over the years, the Csoóri Salon has reached new audiences at a variety of cultural venues and festivals. The series is also a regular presence at the Valley of Arts festival in Vigántpetend, while the songs created during its various seasons are brought together and performed in larger concert productions.
The History of the Csoóri Salon
The Beginnings – Petőfi Literary Museum
During the first phase of the Csoóri Salon, Sándor Csoóri’s friends, fellow artists and contemporaries came together to share their memories of the poet, the man, and the era of which he was a defining figure. The conversations, held at the Petőfi Literary Museum and moderated by Dr Júlia Balogh, featured prominent figures from Csoóri’s life and intellectual circle, including Miklós Duray, Ferenc Novák, Zsolt Szekeres, Mihály Sipos and Mária Illyés.
Through personal stories, memories and conversations, these encounters created not only a portrait of Sándor Csoóri himself, but also a vivid picture of the intellectual and artistic milieu that surrounded and shaped his life, work and thought.
A New Chapter – Csoóri Salon with Miklós H. Vecsei
The Csoóri Salon later entered a new artistic phase under the direction of Miklós H. Vecsei. Artists from the Hungarian music and theatre scene select a poem, an idea or an excerpt from one of Csoóri’s essays as the inspiration for a new musical work.
The premieres of these songs are accompanied by conversations about the creative process, poetry, and what Sándor Csoóri’s intellectual legacy means to artists today. The songs created for the individual evenings are later brought together and performed in larger concert productions.
From Songs to the Grand Concert
Over the years, the songs created for the Csoóri Salon have gradually come together to form a shared body of music. Compositions inspired by the poetry of Sándor Csoóri and created by different artists meet in large-scale concerts, where the individual works become part of a shared musical and poetic world.
In this way, the series carries Sándor Csoóri’s legacy forward in yet another form: the personal interpretations of different artists come together within a shared musical and poetic universe.
